Name:
Mr. Phil Platt, First Officer
Phil has been modeling for the past 25 years and like most of us started
out building and attempting to fly airplanes. After making firewood out
of his aircraft he decided to give boats a try and built a Swamp buggy to
putter around the pond. That went well but he found scale model boats
more to his liking. “They are slower and more fun to build and operate”
according to Flat Top Phil (were did he get that nickname from?). He has
built about 8 scale boats and enjoys the hobby. The Yacht America
he scratch built a few years ago is now up for sale with radio. Over
the years Phil has won many scale boat meets and in 1994 won the overall 1st
place ISMBA trophy. This award is given to the top competitor for the year
according to points given. Phil had 526 ˝ pts for the year with several
perfect precision steering and conning event scores. He knows what he is
doing. Phil was excited about the new club and has volunteered to be the First
Office. Welcome Aboard.
Phil
is married to Donna, has 1 son and they live in the big town of Roanoke. They
recently spent some time in Grand Haven, Michigan at the Coast Guard base. He
had won a 5/8 scale Coast Guard Lifeboat from Midwest earlier that year and
saw the real one in Grand Haven. Needless to say he has a lot of photos
of the real boat so he can make a great scale model. The Coast Guard has
invited him back with the scale boat during the Coast Guard festival. He has
the hull completed and is working on the superstructure, he hopes to have it
done and running this summer.
